Treatment options for COVID-19Therapeutic targets in the viral lifecycle1

There are a number of therapeutic targets in the COVID-19 viral lifecycle: 

3CLᵖʳᵒ: 3-chymotrypsin-like-protease, RNA: ribonucleic acid, RdRp: RNA-dependent RNA
polymerase

1. Binding

Prevent SARS-CoV-2 binding to the angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor:

  • Monoclonal antibodies1
  • Convalescent plasma or plasma-derived therapies1
  • Vaccines2

2. Entry/exit

Inhibit viral/host interaction and endosome maturation:

  • Recombinant ACE2 inhibitors1
  • Protease inhibitors1

3. Proteolysis

Prevent formation of proteins involved in viral replication:

  • Protease inhibitors, e.g., 3CLpro or papain-like protease (PLpro)3

4. RNA replication

Prevent replication of viral genome:

  • RNA polymerase inhibitors1
